Roy Kim Wraps Up Korean Commitments: Singer To Return To College In The U.S. On August 25 In two weeks, chart topping K-pop artist Roy Kim will board a plane and leave South Korea, for now.

In two weeks, chart topping K-pop artist Roy Kim will board a plane and leave South Korea, for now.

The “Superstar K4″ winner will be just another college student when he touches down in the US and resumes his studies at Georgetown University’s Madonough School of Business in Washington, D.C. this month.

Roy has taken two semesters off from school a representative from the singer-songwriter’s management company Fortune Entertainment explained to the website TENASIA, and the college did not allow him to extend his leave of absence.

“I’ll become a more mature person starting fresh with my university life while studying hard in music,” Roy Kim told eNEWS on Monday. “I want to sincerely thank all the fans more than anything.”

This will mean the end to Roy’s stint as co-host of the South Korean radio show “Roy Kim And Jung Joon Young’s Close Friends,” on Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation’s FM4U station.

His last show will be this Sunday.

Roy shot to the top of the Billboard K-Pop charts with his hit single “Spring Spring Spring (or “Bom Bom Bom”), but he faced harsh criticism that he had stolen several other artists’ work on that single and others and passed it off as his own.

When “Spring Spring Spring” won the Mnet 20′s Choice Award for 20′s Booming Star last month, Roy admitted he was disturbed by allegations that he had plagiarized “Where The Wind Blows” by Kim Kwang Suk, “Take On Me” by A-ha and, most recently, the ukulele version of Acoustic Rain’s “Love is Canon,” for the song.

“Lately, I’ve troubled and worried many people,” Roy said in his Mnet acceptance speech, the same week an allkpop poll found that 64 percent of those surveyed believed Roy Kim plagiarized “Love is Canon.”

“My heart is heavy, as well. I’m sorry. But I’ll take this award to mean that I’ll work even harder sincerely and more modestly.”

On August 1, Acoustic Rain released a lengthy statement thanking the online fans that caught the similarity between the ukulele version of his song “Love is Canon and “Spring Spring Spring” and also expressing no intention to pursue legal action for copyright infringement.

“I don’t make music with bad intentions. I try to sing only the truth with a heart filled with love. I also have a trauma concerning lawsuits,” Acoustic Rain’s statement read.

“When I was in my twenties, my parents were faced with a lawsuit so I witnessed a lot of their financial and emotional damage. The effects of that lawsuit led my mother to be treated for long periods of time at the neuropsychiatry ward at the Incheon Christian Hospital and an another hospital in Incheon.”

And while the fact that he and Roy Kim are both on the record label CJ E&M raises the issue of how much freedom the “Love is Canon” singer has to speak his mind, Acoustic Rain says the controversy has been painful for him as well.

“If Roy Kim got hurt from this experience, I want to say that I’m sincerely sorry,” Acoustic Rain’s statement read.

“Honestly, I myself couldn’t do anything for the past two weeks. [I've been] in a state of numbness. Now I will get myself together and work hard as well. I dream of a world filled with forgiveness, consideration, and love.”

Brown Eyed Girls: Survival Tips for Girl Groups

Brown Eyed Girls: Survival Tips for Girl Groups Brown Eyed Girls – A How To Guide for Girl Groups (Interview) Brown Eyed Girls: Survival Tips for Girl Groups Brown Eyed Girls – A How To Guide for Girl Groups (Interview) Brown Eyed Girls: Survival Tips for Girl Groups Brown Eyed Girls – A How To Guide for Girl Groups (Interview) Brown Eyed Girls: Survival Tips for Girl Groups Brown Eyed Girls – A How To Guide for Girl Groups (Interview)

Right now is the age of girl groups. In the past 1-2 years there have been dozens of new types of groups, and just counting the girl groups there are easily about a hundred groups. If you consider there is an average of 5 members to a group, there are over 500 girl members.

As a result, competition among these groups is high, and a lot of energy and determination is required to rank these girl groups. Are Korea’s girl groups doing well?

The group Shinhwa, which has been active for the past fifteen years, is an idol to many newer boy groups who dream of sweet longevity like Shinhwa. On the other hand the lifespan of girl groups seems to be much shorter than that. Included in that category is a girl group who has diligently moved forward since their debut 7 years ago in 2006, and that group is Brown Eyed Girls.

Recently in an interview, Brown Eyed Girls talked about their new album ‘Black Box’ and title song ‘Kill Bill,’ and also shared their life stories, solo activities, concerns and opinions on entering the industry overseas, and shared their secrets to a long-lasting girl group. They laughed continuously while sharing their ideal men, and got serious when talking about their music.

Regarding their ideal men, Brown Eyed Girls said they should be men who ‘have clean fingernails and smell fragrant,’ and ‘have symmetrical faces.’ They openly shared, ‘You shouldn’t be flustered, and must persevere without fear’ and ‘at times, call each other out, and it will help mold your teamwork.’ The group kindly shared how to survive the harsh and vast music industry with sometimes strange but relatable words in their interview.

Let’s first discuss your new song. What kind of song is ‘Kill Bill?’

”Kill Bill’ was a song we tried to relate to the masses. Although we paid homage to the movie ‘Kill Bill’ in the music video to bring laughter to the audience, it didn’t go as well as we expected. We tried to elicit laughter through ‘B level code,’ but people assumed we would never do something comical, and instead tried to find hidden agendas in the song. It’s hard to think that in this day and age there are people who don’t know Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Kill Bill.” (JeA)

Was there a specific emphasis for ‘Kill Bill?’

‘There was a huge burden for our comeback because previously ‘Sixth Sense’ was such a hit. As a vocal-focused group at the time, we wanted to work towards that end. The starting intro is a ‘fa’ note, and is hard for most female singers to sing. We really sang with all our strength. We thought if we continued that route, we would put too much distance between us and the public. The fans seemed to like our appearance on ‘SNL Korea,’ so we decided to approach the public more comfortably.’ (JeA)

How have you changed since then?

‘There was been a significant change in makeup. We’ve erased our usual stage makeup and changed to a simple beauty makeup that isn’t smokey.’ (JeA)

‘Previously we would wear a ton of makeup, but now even our eye makeup is quite light. Even so, because our ‘strong’ image has been so impactful, I don’t think people even notice. For me, I’m practically not even wearing any makeup.’ (Gain)

You’ve been a girl group for 8 years now. Have there been changes since then?

‘When we get to a set there are increasing number of people we don’t know. This is good but also sad. When we go to the waiting room for a music program, there are more people to receive greetings from than for us to greet. It’s fun to see brand new juniors. We look at them with the ‘proud mama smile.’ They are much too young to be our competition. They’re just different. They’re all so pretty and charismatic, and are so talented.’ (Narsha)

Your member’s solo activities have increased. How has that affected the group?

‘It feels a lot more solid. When we get together we know exactly what the members have been up to, so it’s easy. We work together easily.’ (JeA)

Are you satisfied with your solo activities? Gain’s was especially unconventional.

‘There was a code, and it was a big load to carry alone. Especially for ‘Abracadabara,’ the older members were so sexy and experienced that I had a hard time keeping up with them. I often thought to myself, ‘If only I was as old as them.’ I couldn’t pull off the same kind of aura. Thankfully I was twenty-six when I started my solo activity with the song ‘Bloom,’ so I was able to express myself better. I’m glad overall it went well.’ (Gain)

Let’s go back to ‘Kill Bill.’ How was the performance?

‘Although the song’s concept seemed easy, the choreography was really difficult. When you’re not singing, the dance moves are really difficult. It might have even sounded easy live, but it was close to impossible to sing and dance at the same time. Honestly we weren’t ready even three days before our first performance. After our first stage, people started saying, ‘It was not live,’ as if it was the truth. They said ‘They didn’t do it live because they’re older and it’s difficult for them.’ To be sure, we performed live.’ (JeA)

Do you still get nervous for your first performance?

‘We’re always nervous for the first stage. But compared to the 5-6 times we used to record, now we finish it in about 2 takes. Since it is physically taxing, our recording time has significantly decreased. These days I’m more tired than the older members. I even take nutrition pills… I was fine up until last year but it seems like something’s changed this year.’ (Gain)

For this 8 year girl group, is there another change besides reduced stamina?

‘Before we used to share the waiting room with several other teams, but now wherever we go we get our own room. Even if all the other groups share rooms, they always give us our own room.’ (Gain)

‘We always look out for the boy idol groups. Choreography teams treat us special. Et cetera.’ (JeA)

‘Like JeA said, we’re always focused on the attention of the younger groups. We always think we need to show them something great. We can’t help it because there are so many people watching us. We are always preceded and followed by male groups, from EXO to Beast… We’re receiving a lot of energy from them.’ (Narsha)

Is there one member who has gone through a big transformation?

‘Miryo has exploded in her rap skills. She was good before too, but she’s greatly improved. Even among our group we are all very surprised.’ (JeA)

‘Thank you for listening to me. Hard work does pay off. I think I’ve been holding onto the disappointing performance I gave on ‘Show Me the Money.’ Even though it’s late, I’ll work even harder to show you good things.’ (Miryo)

‘When I think about that incident it’s a real pity. I’m sure Miryo carried a big burden because she was alone and had to perform on a survival-type stage. It was unfortunate that she wasn’t able to showcase all of her skills. In reality when we walk into the recording room, she is something else… even the people who used to say stuff about her are raving about how good she is.’ (Narsha)

Are there changes in the relationships between members?

‘I think we’ve all put away competition, oversensitivity, burden, and greed for singing parts. Before during recording we would compete for parts, but now it’s nothing like that.’ (Gain)

Psy’s ‘Gentleman’ features Brown Eyed Girls’ arrogant dance. Gain even featured in the music video… Recently your new song ‘Kill Bill’ was featured on America MTV’s ‘Must hear pop songs.’ Are you aware of overseas reactions?

‘Although people say that K-pop has fizzled, overseas it’s still very popular. We didn’t know it, but there are some places where ‘Abracadabra’ is still in the top five charts. It was either Southeast Asia or Thailand. We’re also optimistically discussing overseas activities. I cautiously predict this year is the year we actually do it.’ (JeA)

‘We’re often asked why we don’t go overseas. We discussed it in lengths with Psy as well. I realized then that it’s not something to be considered trivial. Everything has to be just right. If we go overseas unprepared we will only meet defeat. Before when singers would film music videos overseas it was so fascinating, but now it’s not that big of a deal. I think now rather than simply going overseas, it’s more important to be a hot issue in Korea.’ (Gain)

Do you ever think about wanting to outshine your hit song ‘Abracadabra?’

‘From the beginning we gave up that dream. That song has the perfect 3 – song, dance, and concept. It would be nice if we could have something similar, but if we focus too much on it we will only come up with imitations instead of innovative songs. We want to show songs of a completely different nature like we did with ‘Sixth Sense.” (JeA)

According to Lee Juk, who is in the same agency as Gain, there has been talk of the bank breaking up.

‘Even though we are in different agencies we still work together as Brown Eyed Girls. I think even if we marry we will continue with this work. Because our female fandom is so close, I think they will support us even after we get married. But because none of us want to get married yet, we will be completely active for a few more years.’ (JeA)

‘This is all four members’ desires. To continue doing this even after marriage and childbirth. For now we are more ambitious about music. There’s a lot to do and a lot to show.’ (Miryo)

At this point I want to hear the secret of a girl group’s longevity.

‘Good personality? There is no impatience. When we decided to do something there was no fear in diving right in. All four members work hard, and aren’t affected when little things don’t work out.’ (JeA)

‘We are very patient. When the time or situation arose we were able to endure it. I think it was fate that the four of us came together. We’re at the age where we can understand each other, and even if there is friction we can get over it. There haven’t been any big issues until now.’ (Narsha)

‘Oh! In our group Kakao Talk chat room, we call each other out and mold our teamwork. We can work things out by talking things out over a drink.’ (JeA)

‘Kill Bill’ is about strong women who punish the bad guys. What are you love lives like?

‘JeA and Gain are very good at controlling the situation. In layman’s terms, ‘mildangg.’ Narsha and I are a little awkward because our last respective relationships were so long ago.’ (Miryo)

Do you want to date? What is your ideal man?

‘Before I used to want someone with a good body but now I’ve become more picky. He has to have clean fingers, and I want it to be someone who smells good. Josh Hartnett? (Laughter) I don’t really like men with sweaty palms. I’ve had some past trauma.’ (JeA)

‘I have three important requirements. A social nature, a symmetrical face, and a man who can hold me. Because I don’t have a symmetrical face, I want to meet a man who does.’ (Miryo)

‘When I meet someone new it never works out. This isn’t just because I’m a celebrity, it was always like this. I’m more comfortable with people I see often and have known for a while. Then Jo Kwon or Im Seulong? (Laughter) I might just end up marrying someone I already know.’ (Gain)

‘I like someone who is tactful. There are people around me who seem to have personalities I like, but when I get to know them they’re not right for me, so it’s not easy to choose.’ (Narsha)

It’s already time to conclude this interview. Please give me a word on Brown Eyed Girls’ future plans.

‘In the future the members will have various activities in music. Watch a lot of Gain’s movies, and please attend if we have concerts. And we’re not going to disband so don’t worry. There’s been a lot of talk about the last track in our album but that’s about our friendship. I hope you look forward to our future activities.’ (JeA)

[Spoiler] “Lee Soon-sin is the Best”: Episode 42 Recap

by: Raine

—

I like that there are no secrets between Joon-ho and Soon-shin. I hope it stays that way as the tension ramps up. I also want to see Yeon-ah stop being pathetic. But I’ll settle for cute.

AGB Nielsen Nationwide had this episode coming in at 27.1%.

“Lee Soon-sin is the Best” is directed Yoon Seong-sik by and written by Jeong Yoo-kyeong and features IU, Jo Jeong-seok, Ko Doo-sim and Lee Mi-sook.

Episode 42 recap

A drunken Mi-ryeong talks to psychotic Yeon-ah as though she’s Soon-shin. She sobs and swears that Chang-hoon didn’t die because of her. Yeon-ah takes in this information with an evil glint in her eye, then she hauls Mi-ryeong home. Hwang and Soon-shin help carry her upstairs while Yeon-ah watches.

The next morning, Mi-ryeong wakes up to a worried Soon-shin who looks like she kept a vigil. Aw. Soon-shin asks after her health and asks her downstairs to eat juk, a food they both love. After an awkward moment, she decides to bring it up to Mi-ryeong instead. The older woman enjoys it and looks at the pin. Then she remembers the nosy Reporter Park – he could completely destroy the tentative relationship they just started to build.

Chan-mi shows Soon-shin a positive article that came out with good comments from netizens. Soon-shin reads it with disbelief and her good mood gets SQUASHED by insincere congratulations from Yeon-ah. Lucky for her, she has to go film. Unluckily for Chan-mi, she gets questioned by Yeon-ah about Soon-shin’s father. Chan-mi lets it slip that he died in a car accident, but then she tells Yeon-ah never to ask her questions about Soon-shin’s privacy because she’s not sincere. The pensive look on her face let’s me know that Yeon-ah ain’t planning to do anything nice with the information she’s gathering. In fact, she decides to have her manager dig up even more dirt on Chang-hoon’s car accident.

Mi-ryeong asks Hwang to silence Reporter Park who could put a total stop to the happiness she’s been enjoying with her daughter.

Gil-ja makes breakfast because she doesn’t want to see Yoo-shin wasting money on banchan. Her husband comments that the purchased banchan was more delicious…heh! The newlyweds come to greet them and then leave early, making Gil-ja sputter with jealousy.

Gil-ja, you’re married to your husband. Not your son. Let him go already!

Then she heads into the newlyweds’ room and finds that it’s a mess and complains about all the cleaning. Um, why do you have to clean their room? Apparently, she comes to the same conclusion and decides to strip the bed and make Yoo-shin do it. She lies that her back hurts and gets Yoo-shin to come home early to help, grinning evilly all the while.

Bok-man comes home to Dalshabet’s “Supa Dupa Diva” blasting from the bathroom and Yoo-shin dancing on the laundry. She convinces him that dancing on laundry is fun and good exercise and invites him to try it. Soon, they’re both dancing and laughing. It’s cute, even though she’s devious.

This is what Chan-woo comes home to:

He is invited to join in and Bok-man is all for it. By the time Gil-ja comes home, Chan-woo and Bok-man are dancing on the laundry. Chan-woo asks his mom to take the laundry to a laundrymat next time so Yoo-shin can work. HA! Bok-man wants to do it because it’s fun and good for dieting. HA!

Gil-ja checks in on Yoo-shin who is asleep and snoring on her work. Heh.

After filming, Chan-mi and In-sung want to go for beer, but Joon-ho shows up to make eyes and Soon-shin. In-sung doesn’t notice that the new lovebirds want some alone time and invites them out. Joon-ho leans in and tells him to get lost. HAHAHA! Then Joon-ho hauls Soon-shin off on a date.

He takes her for food and she chooses to eat sundae instead of some fancy food. She silences him by shoving food in his mouth. It’s so cute.

And THEN!…a cute young guy comes up and says he loves her drama and that she’s prettier in person. He asks her for her autograph leaving her utterly flabbergasted.

Check it. She’s so cute:

Joon-ho is enjoying her shock and has to tell her to sign her autograph – she does it in the most adorable plain script. When her first fan leaves, she marvels at her very first autograph. Joon-ho congratulates her and enjoys her adorableness. Then he advises her to wear a hat and sunglasses because people are now staring at her. He don’t want no one checking out his woman! RAWR!

And then….a couple of girls come over to ask for her autograph and Soon-shin can’t stop smiling, which means Joon-ho can’t stop smiling, which means they’re still smiling in the car. ACK! CUTE! She wants to make a new autograph and starts planning for signing events and regretting how she signed her name before. She teases him about being jealous of her popularity and warns him to get her autograph now before the line gets too long. So he does the cheeky boyfriend thing and points to his cheek and says: sign here. He leans towards her and closes his eyes.

She grabs his face in his hands and plants one on his lips, leaving them both happy, speechless and very, very awkward. KYAAAAA!

Next scene is party-pooper Soo-jung mommy with a jealousy complex. She asks if Joon-ho was out on a date with Soon-shin. He freely admits it and says he won’t break up because of Dong-hyuk. Besides, Joon-ho defends, father isn’t cheating. He asks Soo-jung to understand Dong-hyuk because he seems lonely lately.

Honestly, that’s probably a good idea although suggesting that he’s not cheating is probably not the best way to go. The two are lonely because they don’t’ communicate.

Soo-jung points out that Dong-hyuk still hasn’t come home and he cheated on her with her friend. She feels backstabbed by the both of them and by Joon-ho. She tells him that going out with Soon-shin is looking down on her. She bets Soon-shin flirted with him like Mi-ryeong did Dong-hyuk.

Guh, seriously????

He admits he liked Soon-shin first, a one-sided love, shocking his mother. He offers to talk to Dong-hyuk, but she wants to divorce.

At the hospital, Dong-hyuk is looking at the advert that Mi-ryeong and Soon-shin shot and smiling like a lovesick fool. Joon-ho asks him what the hell is wrong and Dong-hyuk compares his time out of the house to the time when Joon-ho ran away. He just needed to get away. Joon-ho points out he’s the head of family and that Soo-jung only has him and only wants his love. Dong-hyuk says he needs time for him, not away from Soo-jung. Joon-ho wonders if he can trust his father. Just the question itself means that you DON’T trust your father, baby boy.

Joon-ho admits to dating Mi-ryeong’s daughter and Dong-hyuk gapes…not a good sign.

South Korean Parents Look To K-Pop Schools To Create Career Paths For Musically Gifted Children

South Korean Parents Look To K-Pop Schools To Create Career Paths For Musically Gifted Children Def Dance Skool in Seoul's Gangnam District is one of the thousands of K-pop training schools that have popped up recently around South Korea.

Lee Byeong Hwa is a 48-year-old South Korean stay-at-home mom whose 11-year-old daughter Kim En Jae wants nothing more than to become a K-pop star.

Although in years past, Lee would have written off her daughter’s obsession with stardom as a childish fantasy, there are, she believes now real world steps a musically gifted child can take to achieve fame.

“In my days, studying hard was everything, but now we see there are other options for our children,” Lee told the New York Times as mother and daughter waited outside a Seoul studio for Kim’s chance to audition for the reality singing television program “Superstar K.”

Options that include one of the thousands of K-pop training schools around South Korea, like Def Dance Skool in Seoul’s Gangnam District, started by Yang Sun Kyu in 2002.

“Eleven years ago, when I first started this school, parents thought only teenage delinquents came here,” Yang said. “Parents’ attitudes have changed.”

And so apparently have the attitudes of students.

A study conducted last year by the Korea Institute for Vocational Education and Training, found the vocation of entertainer to be the most popular career choice for students of all ages along with doctor and teacher.

And although K-pop record labels like YG Entertainment and S.M. Entertainment have operated their own “training” schools for their up-and-coming artists for years, Yang believes the popularity of the genre has created the need for such schools by the general public.

Student Chae Young, 13, wants to be like the rapper and international sensation Psy. He believes all his time at the school will pay off.

“All these hours I spend here are my investment for that dream,” Chae said.

But singer Hong Dae Kwang, who came in fourth in last year’s “Superstar K” competition, warns of the fierce competition in the world of K-pop.

“They all sing, dance and perform well, like well-made machines,” he said.

But for aspiring stars like 18-year-old Woo Ji Won, who was also auditioning for “Superstar K5,” it’s all about being more driven than the competition.

“My classmates are cramming for college entrance exams, but I go to a K-pop school seven evenings a week,” Woo said. “After coming home past 10, I study K-pop video on YouTube for hours.”
