When the CEO of Sony Music International Edgar Berger and President of Sony Music Asia Denis Handlin met the girl group Crayon Pop in South Korea last month, the five band members reportedly made quite an impression.
Berger and Handlin reported back to the record label that they were “very impressed with the group’s different and original performance” and that they believed “the band can make it in the global market,” Lee Se-hwan, a representative from Sony Music’s Korea office told the Wall Street Journal.
“They were impressed by their different concept and creativity, and determined them as artists and content that can sell in global markets.” Sony Music added in an official statement, according to the website allkpop.
On Monday, Sony Music announced that they have agreed to a partnership with Crayon Pop’s record label Chrome Entertainment, in order to help the band break into a new international audience.
Chrome Entertainment CEO Hwang Hyun Chang he is excited about what Sony Music, with artist roster that includes K-pop singers Kim Bo Kyung and Tim as well as international superstars Beyonce, Justin Timberlake and Usher, can do for Crayon Pop’s career.
“Working with a global company like Sony Music will be a great opportunity for Crayon Pop to grow further and I am really excited about what this deal could bring about in the future,” Hwang said.
Crayon Pop, whose single “Bar Bar Bar” is currently number two in its fifth week on the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100, has been hard at work in the studio working on a follow-up song and practicing their new dance moves, according to a Chrome Entertainment representative.
“With the release date planned for mid-September, [Crayon Pop is] currently working on a new song,” the rep said on August 2.
“Though the members have been busy with their schedule recently, they’re creating choreography in their spare time and preparing for their follow-up promotions.”
According to Lee, Sony Music has been paying close attention to K-pop acts since Psy rose to international prominence with “Gangnam Style.”
“Since Psy’s global popularity, the head office has been showing a lot of interest in the Korean music scene and want to know what’s hot,” he said.
Crayon Pop’s “Bar Bar Bar” music video has received over 2 million hits on YouTube since being released on June 20.
