Actresses Jun Ji Hyun and Kim Hee Sun have been spotted wearing the same dress from the Christian Dior Haute Couture collection.

First introduced to the wider celebrity world in January at the 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, fabulous Marion Cotillard dazzled the red carpet wearing this strapless silk charmeuse high-low gown. She immediately made it to many “best-dressed” lists, receiving praise worldwide.

Due to the silk material and a high empire-waist, the dress is described to be a nod toward more traditional Asian wear. The ribbon tied around the waist and the sheer fullness of the dress invokes the feel of a traditional Korean hanbok for women.

Jun Ji Hyun, having been personally invited by Dior’s creative director Raf Simons, wore the gown at July’s Christian Dior 2013 F/W Haute Couture show in Paris. She matched it with Dior’s Pre-Fall white knit top. Fans have compared her to a living doll.

Kim Hee Sun made a tribute to both traditional and modern sensibilities as she posed against a background of an old, traditional Korean house for the fashion magazine “Cosmopolitan.” The dress was slightly crumpled to show her bare leg, juxtaposing the elegant atmosphere with a chic heel.

Defconn Comes Back with "Notorious Girl" MV Teaser

Defconn comes back with a teaser clip for his upcoming single, “Notorious Girl,” featuring Boni.

Earlier this month, Psy-meets-Lonely-Island rapper Defconn released an explicit music video for “Cocktail,” featuring Rania T-ae. Mostly known for comedic acts on television and as a host on “Weekly Idol,” the rapper returns with R&B diva Boni, adding to an already illustrious list of past female collaborators. Minah from Girl’s Day is among recent features.

The black-and-white teaser shows Defconn sitting silently in a chair as an intense scene unravels before him. Stoic shots of tears falling from a girl’s face and a tattered rose dropping to the ground are juxtaposed with a man uncontrollable with anger. While his earlier act had not-so-subtle sexual innuendos abound, “Notorious Girl” seems to promise a more dramatic side of Defconn.

Kang Seung-yoon Dreams Big in "Stealer" Kang Seung-yoon Dreams Big in “Stealer”

Kang Seung-yoon Dreams Big in "Stealer" Those of us scanning our facebook pages around 11 PM EST on August 13th may have noticed that YG Entertainment rather suddenly dropped the third single from newcomer Kang Seung-yoon, “맘도둑(Stealer).” Although other singles from Kang have been hyped, or maybe overhyped, and YG seems to be seriously guilty of releasing everything all at once with way too much hype, it may be that this time they did it wrong.

The song is not necessarily anything to write home to the Seoulbeats readership about. It is, in a very real way, merely standard love rock song fare. It’s better than the last two singles, but that isn’t necessarily saying much. Despite his beautiful live voice, YG drowned it in a sea of bland contemporary rock sound for the first two songs. While “Stealer” (YG’s translation, but its literal translation is “Thief” in Korean, some have insisted) has a bit of a kick to it. What really sells the song is not the sound itself, but the stunning visual presentation in the form of the music video. Kang stars alongside actress Yoon Jin-yi, and where the song takes off a bit, the music video swells with a heart, a soul and a beat: aegyo in a form that promises to be equally appealing to adults and teens alike.

Indeed, while Kang is supposed to be the star, Yang Hyun-Suk’s casting choice in Yoon was excellent, and she steals the show. Lipsyncing a la the supermodels in George Michael’s “Freedom ’90″ to some of the DEE.P and Choi Pil-gang-penned lyrics, and looking lovingly into the camera, Yoon proves her mettle as the Queen of Aegyo that we knew her to be after seeing A Gentleman’s Dignity, but this time with an undeniable edge which is a vast improvement over the essentially annoying Im Me-ari, all in a music video where she delivers no actual lines! Yoon’s chemistry with the camera is nothing short of a complete delight.

The love story between Kang and Yoon is set in a lush backdrop with Alice in Wonderland-like qualities. As the video moves from animation to live action, it opens with Yoon sitting on a school bus, looking dreamily out the window. Much like in the Alice story, the bright flowers and the color of the light cascading through them in her fantasy are both familiar and a little too unreal, a little bit absurd but in a dreamy way. Kang, the object of her dream, next appears strumming his guitar and singing in the stunning voice that made him a tough competitor on Superstar K a few years ago. Both the video and the song really take off as Yoon syncs to Kang’s swelling voice:

“바보 같은 강승윤 나도
너를 사랑해 ” 그리곤 키스했어
(English translation)
“Kang Seung Yoon, you fool,
I love you too” then you kissed me

Given the Alice theme, it’s perhaps not surprising that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ “Don’t Come Around Here No More” comes to mind, mostly because it’s the complete opposite. While Petty’s music video dreams up a fantastically terrifying journey down the rabbit hole for Alice, Kang Seung-yoon instead conjures paradise.

This isn’t the first time that K-pop or even YG has utilized elements that recall this tale. However, while Seungri borrowed heavily from Petty’s retelling of the story in “VVIP,” “Stealer” reproduces it with Tim Burton-esque visuals mod the creepy drama. A traditionalist might say that this completely neuters the Alice story, and in a way it does, but it’s just too nice for it to fall flat.

Possibly the most surprising thing about this music video was the other video it reminded me of, an old memory from my childhood. As I sat and watched “Stealer,” I was reminded of why I was so enthralled with MTV at a young age. It brings back the magic of my favorite video of 1988, Rod Stewart’s cover/rewrite of “Forever Young.”

Although looking back I now realize that video wasn’t much, for a six year old it carried that same feeling of freedom that the Alice story promised, paired with the beauty of the open road and the message that things would always be this way. While the song by itself never would have captured my attention, the music video very much did. And while Rod (Bob Dylan really) lied to me in a lot of ways, “Stealer” is a reminder that all these years later, I can still look at a MV with the same fresh, wide eyed excitement and that feeling in my chest that something lovely is unfolding before my eyes. This is the same feeling that I came to understand as I fell in love with my husband, and in that sense, this song joined by the music video, couldn’t have captured the feeling better.

While Kang Seung-yoon has the firepower of one of the big three labels behind him, and that will sell records at first, what will make him a lasting star is memorable music and/or visuals. It seems like his team has figured the latter out, and they might be working their way to an operational model for the former. Song: 3/5, MV: 4/5

Old School K-Pop Duo J-Walk to Make Comeback This Fall
Though variety superstar Eun Ji Won is easily the most recognizable member of one of the original K-Pop idol groups, Sechs Kies, the duo J-Walk has been quietly charming us with their sweet music for over a decade. Members Jang Su Won and Kim Jae Duk were practically wallflowers next to the adorable main vocalist Kang Sung Hoon and charismatic rapper Eun Ji Won, but together, they’ve managed to win our hearts and stay relevant all these years. Sechs Kies, H.O.T’s fiercest rivals, in their heyday While reviewing a hundred demos for their mini-album to be released this fall, they came across a song with such a beautiful melody and lyrics that they’ll be releasing it first as a digital single for their long-awaiting fans...

Musical Realism vs. Reality and What It Means For K-pop

Musical Realism vs. Reality and What It Means For K-pop Musical Realism vs. Reality and What It Means For K-pop

Musical Realism vs. Reality and What It Means For K-pop Structure, precision and dynamics are attributes of music performance that are celebrated in K-pop more than any other form of popular music. We’ve discussed with great depth and breadth the artistry of the performance and what makes the K-pop experience so great. Seoulbeats‘s own existence is a reflection how awesome K-pop is as a pop culture medium, and to me (and I may be biased), it’s bar none.

However, while all of this is extremely insightful (and well worth reading), it might behoove us to discuss, for reasons indicated later, K-pop and its performance nature in a more metaphysical sense: what is the relationship between musical “realism” and “reality” in music within the context of K-pop? Is this relationship different from other musical genres, and if so, why is it different and how does it change our perceptions and consumption of K-pop?

In his video concerning the validity of mp3s vs. lives, Mike Rugnetta of PBS’s (America’s Public Broadcasting Service) Idea Channel argues that because recordings dictate perceptions of the live performance due to the constructed reality (realism) of the recording, and vice versa, neither one is superior nor inferior to the other. Instead, you get what Mike dubs an “imi-tor-obour-os,” which is just an infinite circle of self-imitation between all the various experiences of a song. By extension, this makes arguments of the relevancy of one media avenue over the other moot. The inquiry simply becomes a misconstrued question, as each type’s fidelity, its “realness,” is dependent on all the others. There is no real way to discern which is objectively better or “more real” without using flimsy argumentation.

That being said, the superiority of one musical experience over another is not much of a point of contention in K-pop, although what does start flame-wars are critiques of the provider of said experience, the idols. Performance analysis is common in K-pop, and groups are often placed on various altars based on live performance skills. So this begs the question, what are K-pop fans (myself included) judging these idols upon? The recording? What if it includes the music video?

Musical Realism vs. Reality and What It Means For K-pop The inclusion of the music video into K-pop’s realism makes its particular constructed reality’s web of influence far broader. As a result, the contingency for active scrutiny of idol performance becomes all the more likely. Coming into nearly any K-pop performance we have clear expectations for what the songs should sound like as well as how the choreography should be performed. For example, groups like Shinee have a set performance ideal and style to uphold in every stage regardless of whether the song being performed is good. In their case, each performance has to be theatrical and pristine.

Our perception of the live stages, wherever it may be and whatever the context, is mediated by the recorded version to the extent that we consciously compare those live performances to the recording. The existence of the idol depends on the delivery of top notch dancing, perfect voices, and smoldering stage presence that matches what we see and hear in the MV. This portrayal perfection in every facet possible, from music and visuals to even social culture, has become so engrained in K-pop that its audience has come to not just appreciate the flawless ideal, but also expect it.

Comparisons between live and recorded can be as technical as using MR-removed videos or as simple and informal as basic conversation about lives. This rabid search for the holy grail of seamless transition between the recording and the live is in many ways fueled by the pretense that as fans, we must prove the abilities and talents of our idols to others and/or ourselves. However, what is important is not why, but the aftermath of said action; in this case, striving for or looking for this fabricated idea of “perfection” subliminally perpetuates the integration of constructed reality into the actual reality of the performance. Whether or not idols involved are talented is irrelevant. The fact is, the more recording-like the idol, the more he or she is respected.

Musical Realism vs. Reality and What It Means For K-pop The effects of such a philosophy on our K-pop musical consumption are almost as abstract as the philosophy itself. When given these fan expectations, you have agencies like SM Entertainment who craft the live performance to be as similar to the music video as humanly possible (lip-syncing and nearly perfect dancing), one starts to wonder whether we’re just watching the music video in a room with air and people (or just another music video if viewing via YouTube). But why does SM Entertainment, and other entertainment companies alike, pursue this “perfect” performance experience? Because we, as viewers, demand that it be so—because Idol K-pop transcends music.

In this frame of reference, K-pop is no longer a media type, but a unique cultural existence (in some ways, a performing art) that involves the marriage of visuals, fandom and music. I don’t think anyone can listen to “Sorry Sorry” without instantly conjuring the hand dance, “Tonight” without thinking of the guitar smashing, “Alone” without the leg move, and “Bar Bar Bar” without ever wishing synchronized jumping teams existed. In the K-pop world, fanchants are part of songs, fan-service is as common as grass, and concept switching from schoolboys to wolf packs to monks is not at all surprising. K-pop is probably the only music culture in which just listening to a song is not just an inferior experience to watching the song being performed, but an incomplete one.

So now we have come to two distinct, and seemingly mutually exclusive conclusions. First, K-pop is dependent on the merger of realism and reality, making any differentiation between the two forms ambiguous. Second, the live performance is the ultimate K-pop experience, not the recording. So, is it possible to make those conclusions coexist?

Musical Realism vs. Reality and What It Means For K-pop Absolutely.

Applying the theory of musical realism to K-pop allows for the analysis of how music is consumed in this sphere of music, but also reveals that K-pop itself is not a musical genre in the slightest. Idol “music” is the construct, idol performance is the reality.

Basically, the compromise between the two conclusions above is that while music is an integral part of K-pop, K-pop in its broadest terms is not music. More specifically, conclusion one shows that artistic expression via music alone in idol-dom is especially complex, and may not actually exist independently. Conclusion two reveals that performance in K-pop exists in a broader scope than music, making it the true expression of K-pop.

This is most certainly a hard concept to swallow on paper, but it’s something we’ve inadvertently accepted for a long time. Realism and reality can be considered as technical and philosophical jargon that provide some explanation of the cause for that acceptance. This doesn’t mean that K-pop is less than Western music, nor does this make any statements on whether K-pop is high culture, or low culture. Instead of trying to defend K-pop against other musical genres or attempt to define it within preconceived musical boxes, it might be better to leave it as a different art form altogether.

In all likelihood, what label we eventually choose to apply to K-pop will have no effect on how we enjoy it. We’ll still watch MR removed videos, and argue over which idol is better, and we’ll still love our biases to death, but what understanding how constructed realism interacts with our musical psyche shows is that the pursuit for the “live” performance is a failed one from the start. A real live, an un-mediated listening experience that diversifies a song, does not and cannot exist in K-pop because it is against the nature of K-pop. Does that matter? Nah, because K-pop is much more than proving musical talent, or “diversifying a piece of music’s instances.” Heck, it’s not even necessary to know what a song “should” sound like. K-pop is about creating and experience that thrives on the enhancement of the viewer/performer relationship, and that creation is just as noteworthy as anything else in the performing arts.

'Social dining' combines networking and food

“Social dining” is a new trend that combines the networking of social media and the fun of sharing a good meal with people. It is already established in the United States and Europe, but the idea is a little unusual for Korea, where connections usually stem from school and family.

Now, however, social dining is catching on in Korea, too. One of the first and most popular social dining groups is called “Zipbob”, which is a Korean word meaning “homemade meal”. Korea’s version of social dining has more of a professional edge, but like its Western counterparts, the key idea is socializing and dining with people you don’t know.

In Zipbob, users create profiles and chat online, finding people who share similar interests; then, once you’ve found a group you like, you can organize dining experiences.

“The social diners are mostly people in their 30s with a job”, said Park In, a Zipbob official. “And the number of people taking part in social dining has been increasing dramatically”.

Loneliness is one major reason for the rising interest, says Park. The number of people living alone in Korea has risen significantly over in recent years, climbing from 2.2 million in 2000 to 4.1 million in 2010, according to the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade.

Most social dining programs are also reasonably priced, typically costing between 10,000 won and 15,000 won ($8.60-$12.90).

Professor Kwak Keum-joo, a professor of psychology at Seoul National University, said, notes that social dining is a progression of modern technology.

“Communication has developed a lot, thanks to the advent of social media, such as Twitter and Facebook”, said Kwak. “In the past, people were satisfied only with meeting people online, but as people continue using social media, they often want to move their online communications offline, and eating together is a natural part of that evolution”.

Kwak added that this new phenomenon could be seen as a positive sign of the development of communications and social media in Korea.

However, she also warned about the dangers of social dining. “It is good to have some new experiences, but one should not get addicted to it or rely too heavily on it”, she said.

K-pop Girl Group SKarf Reminisce Their Many Firsts at Singapore Homecoming Press Conference

SKarf, Tasha, Ferlyn, Jenny, JooA, Hana SKarf - the 1st Singapore-Korea girl group to debut in South Korea is back in town to promote their 1st mini-album 'Luv Virus' with their 1st showcase happening at Kallang Theatre on August 11

K-pop Girl Group SKarf Reminisce Their Many Firsts at Singapore Homecoming Press Conference

SKarf – the 1st Singapore-Korea girl group to debut in South Korea is back in town to promote their 1st mini-album ‘Luv Virus’ with their 1st showcase happening at Kallang Theatre on August 11. SKarf also marks the 1st time that any Singaporean has entered the Korean music industry.

One year ago, on the same date, SKarf aired their 1st reality show on MBS Music, Korea titled “Oh! My SKarf” revealing the lives of the 4 members who were preparing for their debut. Since then, there had been a change of members; Sol’s (Korean) departure was replaced by JooA and Hana, transforming SKarf into a 5-member group which comprises of

Tasha – leader, Singaporean

Ferlyn – charismatic member, Singaporean

Hana – cute (kiyomi) member

JooA – friendly sister

Jenny – maknae (youngest)

The original members claimed that they had no difficulty embracing the new members and encouraged all fans and media to do likewise. JooA likened the group as ‘family’, even stressing that the girls learn the good points from each other with further support from Ferlyn’s response “Instead of saying that we’re competitors, we are more like each other’s teacher”.

K-pop Girl Group SKarf Reminisce Their Many Firsts at Singapore Homecoming Press Conference

Although SKarf’s official debut was on 14 August 2012 with “Oh! Dance” on Music Bank, Ferlyn revealed that since her audition in 2010, they had been put through a tough training regime before they get to present themselves to the public. It was initially quite depressing that they only get to present 50% although they had prepared 200% for their performance. Over a period of time, they learn to expect more from themselves and put in a lot more effort to make their dream come true.

Tasha, who was injured during practice, agreed that the process had been a tough and really tiring one, which really made her more appreciative of the support from their fans, families and the other members.

The two Singaporeans, who doubled as ‘translators’ for the Press Conference, felt very honoured and excited to be performing in front of their family, friends, local fans and media. Tasha felt that “It’s like a dream come true, to be having our 1st showcase in my hometown. It’s really meaningful”.

When asked about the memorable experiences that the group shared during the past one year, Jenny remembered vividly the filming of the ‘Luv Virus’ music video – although it was shot in winter, they had to act like they were in spring which coincided with the mood in the song. For Tasha, it had been ‘Gangnam Dance School’ – the 1st TV program that she had participated in Korea which she really enjoyed, despite the hard work. She received many help from the other participants in the program and stated that the dance steps for BAP’s ‘One Shot’ and INFINITE’s ‘Man In Love’ had been the most difficult so far.

K-pop Girl Group SKarf Reminisce Their Many Firsts at Singapore Homecoming Press Conference

While Tasha emphasized that all the five songs in the first mini-album reflected a more mature side of SKarf, ‘Luv Virus’ is a song about going on a 1st date highlighting the anxiety of ‘What to wear? Where to go?’ Incidentally, the girls, being appointed by the Korean Tourism Board (KTO) as Honorary Ambassadors, individually recommended the following interesting places to visit while in Korea:

Tasha – Busan, a 4 to 5-hour car ride away from Seoul which offers beautiful scenery (sun, sand and sea) and great seafood

Ferlyn – Han River, a peaceful place to escape the hustle and bustle of the ‘noisy’ city

Hana – Chimchibang (Korean bathhouse & sauna), inexpensive and readily available for a relaxing time

JooA – Insadong street which is one of the most memorable attractions in Seoul and represents the focal point of Korean traditional culture and crafts

Jenny – Gangnam Subway Station, a central location endowed with convenient transportation, fashion malls, movie theatres and bookstores.

As part of their ambassador role, SKarf was also in Singapore a month ago, attending a cook-out event to promote Korean food to the public with Hana’s “Hope that more people will enjoy Korean food”.

On their future plans, Ferlyn disclosed that instead of celebrating their 1-year anniversary on 14 August, they will be busy promoting their follow-up song ‘Anymore’ from their 1st mini-album once they are back in Korea. This means the endless music programs and perhaps other Korean variety programs that they will be appearing in their promotional round. Tasha even hinted that the choreography for ‘Anymore’ comes with interesting ‘domino-effect’ dance moves.

While answering to KpopStarz’s question on the other projects that the members will like to do in the future, almost all of them identified ‘acting’ – Tasha and Jenny in Korean drama, Ferlyn in a drama which is in English or Mandarin, Hana prefers to be in a sitcom while JooA wants to participate in a broadway musical.

The Meet & Greet Session that was held at Bugis+, a shopping mall three and half hours after the Media Conference, was attended by fans from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and even Myanmar. The group signed on the mini-album covers and posters for almost three hundred fans. In between, they had interactions with fans where the fans congratulated and gave them gifts.

Ferlyn stressed that “We had put in a lot of effort into our practice for the past two and half weeks for this 1st showcase, with lots of special stages that you have not seen us in before” to further encourage the crowd to attend their showcase happening on 11 August 2013 at Kallang Theater, at 7pm.

Hopefully we will see more of this combination of artists in the future since it promotes a universal connection between artists when it comes to music...

Crayon Pop tops K-pop chart

Girl group Crayon Pop, which garnered popularity for its music video in which two or three of the members jump in turns, took the No. 1 place on the Billboard K-pop chart that came out on Thursday.

The result came after Billboard predicted a rosy future for Crayon Pop. They considered the group a K-pop rookie that will follow in the footsteps of Psy, who became a world star after his horse dance went viral online about a year ago.

However, although Crayon Pop’s song “Bar Bar Bar” has received high rankings on local music charts in recent weeks, many have been surprised at the result since the group only released it on June 20.

The group is trying to continue its momentum by releasing a new song next month.

Meanwhile, the boy group B.A.P has taken the No. 1 place on Billboard’s world album chart with its recently released third mini-album, “Badman”.

It’s the second time the group has earned the honor on the same chart as its second mini-album, “One Shot”, was ranked in the top position.

The group is scheduled to have a two-day concert, “B.A.P Live On Earth Seoul (Wanted)”, starting today at Seoul Olympic Park in Songpa, southern Seoul.

“Many fans from overseas have been coming to Korea recently to come to the concert”, said the group’s agency, TS Entertainment.

“It garners more attention because not only are fans from Japan, Taiwan, Thailand or elsewhere in Asia coming, but also fans from the Americas and Europe are entering the country”.

K-pop Indie Gem: MOT K-pop Indie Gem: MOT

K-pop Indie Gem: MOT MOT() found its humble beginnings as a one man alt rock band, and this lasted until 2001, when it turned into a two-man band — singer eAeon was joined by guitarist Z.EE. The duo released their first of two full albums in 2004. Abstractly, the MOT listening experience can be simplified into the effervescence produced by a lake at sunset, as the setting sun casts an orange gleam on the rippling water below. MOT’s instrumentation acts much like the unsettled lake, while the vocals glow like the sun above. eAeon’s voice, while unassuming at first glance, turns out to be enthralling once one has spent time with it. It’s the kind that puts the listener at peace no matter the arrangement behind it, absent of bells and whistles — to expect more vibrancy or technical skill would dilute the soul of the voice.

“We think our sounds reflect or give the image and the nature of ‘water’, not in the form of overwhelming power nor dynamic movement and energy, but something like in a pond from fairy tales; something mysterious.” –MOT, London Korean Links Interview, July 2007

While some may compare the style of MOT to the earlier days of a more popular name in alternative Korean music, Nell, I think that MOT not only has a distinctly different sound to the former, it also has an illusive quality that makes the group quite different from Nell’s broad-spectrum musical identity. As for other similar groups, the duo does hark back to the likes of Radiohead and other Brit rock bands, but I’d like to avoid giving too many comparative bands for it discolors the listener’s perceptions of the band is.

I think that with MOT firmly residing in the indie category (unlike Radiohead and Nell,) come perspectives on music that beget significant differences in compositional style. Under pressure of vast popularity, music tends to become over-finished; a little too pristine, collected, and assured. In contrast, in nearly any MOT song, there’s always some sort of distortion—a nick in the compositional porcelain—that humanizes the experience.

“나의 절망을 바라는 당신에게” from the duo’s first album, Non-linear, is the perfect example of a song that is brought to life by compositional imperfections. I’ve heard many a song that have a similar tone but rely on a single, consistent instrumental loop that plays underneath the vocal part. What is interesting about this song, however, is that as one progresses through it, it becomes more and more melodically and rhythmically distorted.

While there are a couple of dissonant moments in the first verse, holistically, everything remains cohesive. When the second verse comes around, some parts of the same loop start to go out of tune and clash with the vocals, and you begin to feel the song break down. During the second chorus, the guitar also starts clashing rhythmically with the vocals, pushing the tempo to create further discordance with the original theme. This methodical decomposition is absolutely brilliant, as it conjures a listening experience that is both tangible in execution and conceptually abstract.

Non-linear as a whole follows the same vein, emphasizing deconstruction and unique vantage points within its songs. “I Am” juxtaposes a jazzy piano line with a gritty synth line, “A Wonderful World” tears apart the classic song and reconstructs it as a psychedelic piece, and “Cold Blood” takes a classic alternative rock melody and reduces it to a shell of existence.

Strange season evokes the MOT signature that fans know and love, but with a more polished and crisp exterior. In some respects, it’s a disservice to what made Non-linear captivating as a musical endeavor, abandoning the flaws and subtleties that brought life to their previous collection. For example, “Cloudy Seoul” basks in nearly self-indulgent minimalism, and “11 Over 8” trudges through a monotonous instrumental loop. While I lament the loss of the “trippy,” I wouldn’t let these harsh descriptors discourage you from the album. Belittling the accomplishments of Strange Season by clouded expectations perpetuated by my false sense of authority is not my intention at all. Each man really is to his own when it comes to musical tastes and perceptions of musicians, so it would behoove you to give Strange Season your full and undivided attention before passing judgment.

Whatever your personal conclusions may be, it’s undeniable that Strange Season is most certainly a success in its own right, even if it’s not via the kind of compositional strength that I felt carried Non-linear. “Strange Days” is a song that I personally like, even if the foundations of the song are not of the kind of artistry that I expected from MOT post-Non-linear. “Heaven Song” has a similar feel to “Strange Days,” though I find the instrumentation a bit predictable.

What I love most about MOT, despite my colder feelings towards Strange Season, is that my personal sentiments are no indicator of objective quality. Independent of those likes and dislikes, an MOT album assures a crafted listening experience rather than a product of circumstance. Non-linear is exactly as the title suggests; convoluted, inside-out, and spontaneous.

Strange Season is as aptly named as Non-linear, existing in the netherworld of awkwardness; a moment of adolescence, if you will. The album is moody and tinted in blue-greens, and eclectic in style. It’s stiff in some respects, experimental in others, simultaneously trying to fit in and stand out — reminiscent of teenagers who are trying to figure themselves out. In that sense of things, Strange Season speaks to the human condition as much as Non-linear does.

—◊—

I guess this is when I’m supposed to tie everything into a crisp bow, courtesy of a poetic and grand statement. But I’d much rather have the music provide closure. I can say whatever I want about MOT, but none of it is meaningful until your experiences clash and meld into the musical manifestation of the artist.

at the lullaby I wake up from the sleep, opened my eyes, but you’re already not there
밤새 마당엔 새가 많이 죽었어
in the night a lot of birds died in the garden
난 종이돈 몇 장을 쥐고 전화를 걸어 천국을 주문했어

Whether you walk out desiring more, lost in nostalgia, or thinking that this group is not quite your cup of tea, I hope that this week’s K-pop Indie Gem convinces you that MOT is at least worth a shot.

What's Your Music Style? 'K-pop Vs K-indie'
k-pop, indie We're not going to get into how the difference between the two types of music genres is money, because that has been established long ago, and we all get it. Independent music is produced different and with greater effort, while K-pop is commercialized and sold with ease, and has a steadier fanbase. Because of this, hasn't it set some sort of stigma to the word K-indie? There really is a difference though that surpasses the way that they penetrate the market and their methods of promotion, and that is the quality of their music...
