K-Wave Stateside: K-Pop Stories in American News (Week of November 4 -November 10)

Girls Generation Beats Miley Cyrus at the YouTube Music Awards

Take that Miley, Girls Generation beats you at the YouTube Music Awards for "video of the year." CNN wrote an article about the ladies and how they won for their music video, "I Got a Boy." American people were speechless once they found out that a K-Pop group won over Miley. Congrats Girls' Generation!

In Touch Explains Who Girls' Generation Are

Girls' Generation are getting numerous attention duo to their win at the YouTube Music Awards for their song, "I Got A Boy" being video of the year. In Touch Weekly explained about five things that the American people should know about them. This is definitely giving the ladies more fame as well as attention here in the United States.

Why Girls' Generation Won at the YouTube Music Awards

So the Wall Street Journal had an article on the reason why Girls' Generation won at the YouTube Music Awards for video of the year by beating Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, and a few others. The reason is because of candy colored scenery and had a electric mashup. Also, it was their devoted fans as well. Looks like South Korean music will keep on dominating in the US if the music does not improve. Great job though ladies and congrats once again!

Amber and Her Boyish Appearance

LAWeekly had an article regarding about f(x) Amber Liu regarding about her boyish appearance compared to Sulli, Luna, Krystal, and Victoria. Amber truly stands out from the other three in her group regarding about how she dresses. Amber does not plan on dressing up feminine and would rather dress the way she does currently.

K-Pop is Still Making its Mark

Morning Journal had an article regarding about how after one year due to Psy's promotion in the United States, K-Pop is still making its mark in the US. The United States had Girls' Generation and Psy last year and it has impacted everyone globally. Everyone is into the K-wave and it looks like it is not going away anytime soon.

K.Will Earns Number One Spot on the Korean Billboard Top 100

Billboard wrote an article regarding about singer K.Will earning the third spot on the Korean Billboard Top 100 with his single “You Don’t Know Love.” K.Will became the fifth act to earn three or more number one spots since the billboard chart was introduced in summer of 2011. The article goes on to further explain how 31 year old female soloists IU and Lee Hi both have three and trails behind the Indie-pop boy band Busker Busker as well as girl group SISTAR with four number one spots. Congratulations K.Will!!

Why it is No Surprise to see Girls' Generation's Win at the YouTube Music Awards

So as you all probably know, this week Girls' Generation was all over the news media both domestically in South Korea as well as hit other countries especially the United States for their win at the YouTube Music Awards for their video "I Got A Boy" winning on the category of "Video of the Year." Based on the reviews as well as the judging criteria, the award that determined the win was based on views as well as fans. Girls' Generation's video was watched all over the world and reached over a whopping number of views.

Though let's be serious here, Girls' Generation win here has placed Korean Pop in the international spotlight just like when Psy made his debut for his song "Gangnam Style" last year in the United States; though the ambience seems like it is a mix of "it's time to proudly admit that the Korean Pop culture has truly a place in the media mainstream" as well as "how did K-Pop get so huge!!!"

Like Us on Facebook :

The Ladies' Fan Base is Huge

Girls' Generation fan-based is huge and it is truly not a surprise why the ladies won even though it was here in America. Twitter had numerous tweets regarding about them such as "I voted for Girls' Generation's I Got A Boy to win Video of the Year at the YouTube Music Awards" which flooded the timeline.

Voting Process

Since the voting process is based off of fans voting online as well as can vote numerous times with no restrictions through different kinds of devices; people can keep pressing the replay button on YouTube which increases the view watch. If the song is catchy, great beat, has beautiful artists, and etc., you can expect to reach a high view rate which K-Pop is one that is great on doing this. Round of applause Korea on attracting and getting lots of devoted fans globally!

So Who Voted

So keeping track on Twitter, numerous people from different parts of the world voted on that night; you can really tell that the ladies did a great job promoting their songs globally. Though what was amusing on the tweets was that there were some people such as Mickey Mouse, Zimbabwe that tweeted. Really? Mickey Mouse and people of Zimbabwe knowing Girls' Generation is really interesting; the ladies and with help through media has really done a great job in-terms of promotion. Also, probably the President of the United States threw in a vote for the girls.

I was being sarcastic, Mickey Mouse and Zimbabwe will not know about Girls' Generation; though maybe they can because of media. Despite this, the ladies really do have a huge fan-base and they should really thank their fans for giving them this award! Though it is one to think about on exactly how many videos were actually shared in-terms of viewers on the receiving as well as disseminating the clips? How many unique eyes to the screen views were there amongst the numbers? You might think that the views are huge, though maybe it is a few by the views being done by one person or small minority audience which are truly devoted SNSD fans. Interesting if you think about it since the girls have only been to New York and Los Angeles and no where else in America.

Reactions in America

So when the ladies won, the American people were truly upset and people reacted by being surprised that the girls beat Miley Cyes, Bieber, and Justin Timberlake. Angry people voiced their comments on social media regarding about the group beating these known American music artists and were really fueled by passive aggressive responses.

Though this is common right, there are haters out there and people will post their opinions just to blow off some steam. The people that will be pissed are the ones that have not seen K-Pop or not fans. What the people who got upset should have done is check out the music video and see why it won.

What the people should do is show appreciation for all kinds of music as it brings everyone together; not rant and be pissed off or surprised.

This Girls are No Fluke

The ladies of SNSD are no fluke, they are the real thing and will do everything to win trophies and make themselves known. So with this being said, I am saying congratulations ladies! With all your promotions and all, they have prove themselves by telling everyone that they are great as far as any girl group in South Korea. I mean, sure there are other artists that may have edged them out, though the girls has built a solid base in-terms of their group image as well as longevity when it comes to SM's marketing prowess and strength in their various performance fields.

Here is the video of "I Got A Boy" which won "Video of the Year" with 76,181,514 views!!!

Congratulations once again Girls' Generation!!

EXO Loses Best Worldwide Act In EMAs To Chinese Pop Singer, Chris Lee

EXO may have lost Best Worldwide Artist, but still sent their best representatives.

EXO may have lost Best Worldwide Artist, but still sent their best representatives.

In a win that is stunning to K-Pop fans and will most certainly rock SM Entertainment, EXO suffered the loss of the MTV European Music Award (EMA) Best Worldwide Act to a Chinese pop singer. In the category for Best Worldwide Act, teen heart throbs Cody Simpson, Justin Bieber, and One Direction were seen as the biggest opponents to EXO. The interesting aspect about the fact that they were defeated by a Chinese female solo singer, is that her inclusion in the voting process essentially split the Asian contingency vote.

Like Us on Facebook :

Whereas Girls Generation had PSY as competition in the Asian market for the YouTube Music Awards, EXO had to face off against a Chinese national in their category. The win by Girls Generation, last week, and Chris Lee in the European Music Awards speaks to the way in which the Western music industry model is currently failing. Although, artists such as Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and One Direction command large ticket prices for their performances, their fan bases are not nearly as fervent as what is witnessed within K-Pop and Asian music as a whole.

EXO lost to Chris Lee, a Chinese pop singer, whose claim to fame was winning the music competition program Super Girl in 2005. Subsequent to her win, she became a pop sensation within China and is also known for her acting skills, as well as her haircut which references rock idol David Bowie. In her final vote for the singing competition Super Girl, Chris Lee received over 3.5 million votes which were established from a strong fan base. Chris Lee has released four albums and has acted in a film, as compared to the two albums released by EXO.

As K-Pop attempts to dominate the world market, there will be wins and losses. It is apparent that SM Entertainment has all but abandoned an American market to target Asia, Europe, and South America. The interesting thing is what happens when SM Entertainment's acts from Korea are forced to face up against their counterparts or challengers from larger countries like China. With the sheer number of Chinese citizens, the voting contingency in China may turn against Korean artists and towards their own artists.

EXO was represented at the EMA 2013 Awards by their members Kris and Suho. They made a great appearance for the group and were fine representatives for SM Entertainment. As K-Pop continues across a global market, what do you think the industry can do to achieve more success outside of Asia?

Despite Losing To Eminem At YouTube Music Awards, Psy's 'Gentleman' Is The Most Watched Video Of 2013

If there is anyone left out there who still considers South Korean sensation Psy a one-hit wonder, you need to do your homework. Psy’s

If there is anyone left out there who still considers South Korean sensation Psy a one-hit wonder, you need to do your homework.

Psy's music video for "Gentleman," the follow-up to the King of K-pop's career-making smash "Gangnam Style," currently has over 575 million views on YouTube, making it the site's most popular video of 2013, according to Billboard.

Like Us on Facebook :

And despite losing out to rap superstar Eminem for Artist of the Year at Sunday's first annual YouTube Music Awards, it is Psy who has driven the most traffic to the website according to reporter Jessica Oak.

"Although 'Gentleman' wasn't able to snag an award at the YouTube Music Awards last weekend, the video is still the most-watched video on YouTube of 2013 with 577 million views and counting," Oak wrote.

"Currently, the video is ranked at number seven on YouTube's all-time most-viewed videos list. The video is expected hit 600 million views by end of this year, which could bring the video up to number five."

In a cover interview in last month's issue of L'Uomo Vogue, Psy, who is currently putting the finishing touches on a new album featuring collaborations with rock gods Brian May of Queen and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, admitted "Gentleman" allowed him to breathe a sign of relief.

"After 'Gentleman' was out, I was really satisfied with what it had done, because it proved that I was not a one hit wonder, a lucky shot," Psy said.

"Nobody can ever label me that now. 'Gentleman' has [over] 500 million views right now, the song also hit number one in 81 countries, and I am really relieved by that. Now I can really do what I have to do, comfortably. I don't have to make another dancing phenomenon, I am just going back to where I came from and it's really comfortable right now."

"Gentleman" has broken YouTube records in five categories, including the most views in a video clip's first 24 hours, the most views in any 24-hour period and the video to reach 200 million, 300 million and 400 million views the fastest.

"Gangnam Style" remains the most watched video clip in Internet history, with over 1.8 billion views.

After a seven-month hiatus from performing, Psy will return to the stage on Dec. 22 for a three-day stint at Seoul's Olympic Gymnastics Arena that he is calling Moonlight Gymnastics.

"For all of us who tried their best this year, let's do something that fits our 'class' for just one day," Psy wrote last week in a post to his more than 3 million Twitter followers explaining his concept for the December concerts.

"Let's do some Moonlight Gymnastics on the moonlit night of Christmas at the Gymnastics Arena that's known to be the best place to do gymnastics."

'Tis the Season for Concerts - Choose Your Pick

K-pop stars get busy preparing their concerts every December. From big-name superstars to underground indie bands, a countless number of concerts await the fans. A concert adviser commented that some 40% of all concerts held in a year is scheduled for December.

A CJ E&M music business adviser commented, "December has a lot of memorable holidays, including Christmas and New Year's Eve. Not only do stars want to be remembered on those holidays but many of them relish wrapping up the year doing what they love - performing music. The second most amount of concerts is held in May, which celebrates the family and is ripe for event-type concerts."

There is no shortage of concerts prepared this year around. These tickets will sell out soon, so if you're planning on visiting Korea or are in Korea, make sure you get these tickets as soon as they are available.

Like Us on Facebook :

The veteran musicians have announced their concert plans much to the delight of their fans. The two biggest names in this category are PSY and Jo Yong Pil.

PSY is heralded as a "world star", but he announced on his twitter that the "world star" lifestyle is not to his liking. He tweeted, "I used to perform over 15 songs on average on any stage, but I've lasted this whole year with just 2 songs! I need to let loose with you guys, so let's go crazy for one night!" Before his explosion onto the international music scene, PSY was referred to as the "master of concerts". Although he forwent his annual New Year's Eve concert last year because of Gangnam Style's fame, he has repeatedly expressed his desire to perform back in his "home field".

Jo Yong Pil, commonly referred to as the "Godfather" of Korean music, released his 19th album "Hello" this year and had unmatched success. He will be having his encore concert to wrap up his 2013 music activity and hopefully return sooner than later with a new album.

Other veteran singers such as Lee Seung Hwan and Park Jin Young will also hold December concerts. Lee Seung Hwan is looking forward to his 25th anniversary of his music career in 2014 and has announced that he will have a retro-concert that will showcase most of his hit songs that spanned nearly three decades. Park Jin Young will hold his trademarked and wildly popular "NC-19" concert in December.

Lee Juk and Brown Eyed Soul are other veteran singers preparing for concerts in December. Rose Motel, who garnered some popularity after their appearance on Infinite Challenge, are also planning for a concert of their own.

Some stars are deciding to take the stage together to provide their fans with a very different experience. Korea's premier band Yoon Do Hyun Band (also known as YB) is performing with starlet diva Park Jung Hyun. This event was put together by an event company who were excited about the prospect of putting a pure R&B singer like Park Jung Hyun with the pop rock sound of YB. One event manager explained, "Their synergy is amazing, and no one is going to regret coming to this one."

Gummy and Wheesung, who are good friends and ex-lovers, will be repeating their 2005 Duet Concert this December.

SM's hottest stars are coming together for an SM concert that will be spread over 9 days. SHINee will perform on the 21st, and Girls' Generation will take the next day, the 22nd. f(x) and EXO will perform together for the the 24th and the 25th, followed by TVXQ who will perform on the 26th and the 27th. Super Junior will wrap it up with back to back concerts for the 28th and the 29th. SM will sell the tickets in two formats - "ALL TICKET", which grants access to all the concerts, and the "Choice Ticket", which grants access to four of the eight concerts.

Psy, Lee Byung Hun and Korea's Hottest Stars Hit NYC for CJ Group's 60th Anniversary Party

On Thursday, November 7 New York City welcomed some of Korea's hottest celebrities to the Spotlight on Korean Cinema red carpet event at the Museum of Modern Art.

Like Us on Facebook :

The special event was hosted by CJ Entertainment in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of its parent company, CJ Group, and served to introduce promising young Korean directors, Moon Byung Gon and Jo Sung Hee, to influential members of the international entertainment industry through a special screening presentation of two films.

Also joining the screening to show their support for the new wave of Korean cinema were several of the country's leading actors and entertainers.

Entering MoMA on the red carpet at last night's event were international actor Lee Byung Hun and world mega star Psy, who served as representatives of the Korean entertainment field's increasingly globalized appeal.

Actors Ha Jung Woo, Go Soo, and Lee Jin Wook also joined actress Gong Hyo Jin and TV personality Hwang So Hee at the screening presentation.

Additionally, CJ Entertainment donated ten iconic Korean films from famed directors such as Bong Joon Ho and Park Chan Wook to The Museum of Modern Art's Film Collection "for the purposes of preservation and education" and in accordance with the "mission to expand the world stage for Korean film," explained the CEO Jeong Tae Sung.

CJ Entertainment, according to Jeong, is "embracing the future with fresh, young talents" and the celebrities in attendance "represent new energy and Korea's premium acting talent."

"Lee Byung Hun," said Jeong, "is carrying a banner for Korean entertainers in Hollywood." It is no surpirse then, that with two US major motion pictures under his belt, the veteran actor was one of the night's biggest attractions.

"Gangnam Style" singer Psy also made a big impression on the crowd as a representative for the Korean Wave. "He is a man who needs no introduction. He single-handedly created a new category of international stars," explained Jeong.

Before the screening of his short film, Safe, up-and-coming director Moon Byung Gon modestly addressed the audience to introduce his creation and added, "the celebrities here tonight are very hard to meet in person even in Korea. So thank you all for coming out tonight."

Safe has earned Moon a great deal of international recognition, particularly after it won the Palme d'Or and several other recognitions at the 66th annual Cannes Film Festival.

The film is about a young college student who works as a cashier in an illegal gambling house until things spiral out of control.

The second screening of the night was of director Jo Sung Hee's critically acclaimed film End of Animal.

The post-apocalyptic film is dismal and quiet but masterfully put together despite Jo's assertion that it "is a little rough around the edges."

It was also revealed that the remake rights for End of Animal has been sold in the United States and that an full-length feature film version of it is in the works.

Both films were well received by the audience and the entire event gave some new insight into the Korean film industry and boosted the recognition of for many of the country's promising actors and influential stars.

CJ Entertainment was established in 1995 and since has become the nation's leading motion picture studio. Since its inception, the company has invested heavily in the Korean film industry making it the world's 8th largest.

Review: G-Dragon And Hyung Don Score With The High-Energy Dance Track 'Going To Try' [AUDIO]

However you feel about Big Bang frontman G-Dragon, the rapper knows how to stay in the limelight.

More than two months after his smash double-album "Coup d'Etat" was released, G-Dragon is back in the top 10 with his high-energy electro-dance collaboration with Hyung Don "Going To Try."

G-Dragon and Hyung performed the song in front of 35,000 fans for the televised 2013 Infinity Challenge Freedom Road Music Festival.

Like Us on Facebook :

And the hard-hitting studio version of dance trick, which debuted at number 10 this week on the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100, appears to be just the beginning of G-Dragon's return to the charts.

In addition to returning with a new Big Bang single by the end of the year according to the group's record label YG Entertainment, the rapper also wrote and produced his bandmate Taeyang's new single "Ringa Linga," due out on Friday.

But getting back to the G-Dragon and Hyung collaboration, the production on "Going To Try" is airtight, featuring a satisfying blend of the darkly reimagined take on dirty South hip-hop beats that has become the Big Bang frontman's trademark, and a high-energy hook that recalls the wild electro abandon of that other YG artist, Psy.

What often gets lost in the seemingly unending dialogue about Psy's two record breaking hits "Gangnam Style" and "Gentleman," is that beyond the sight gags and the inventive dance moves, both tracks, musically speaking, are a celebration of everything that made early rave culture great--building beats that can elevate a crowd into euphoria and a synthesizer sound that is as raw as synthesizers get.

"Going To Try" delivers on both of these fronts.

Even K-pop fans that think the genre starts and ends with Psy would be well advised to give the new G-Dragon and Hyung single a listen.

Rapper Adam WarRock Opens Up About His New Album 'The Middle of Nowhere,' Psy And Nerdcore In A KpopStarz Exclusive Interview

You might not think that rapping about comic book characters or Ron Swanson of the NBC comedy "Parks And Recreation" would be a smart career move for a rapper.

Yet, Korean-American hip-hop artist Adam WarRock has earned himself a loyal legion of fans playing by his own rules and rapping about...well, whatever he feels like.

WarRock's new album "The Middle of Nowhere," released on Tuesday, runs the gamut of subject matter, from the challenge of making a living as a musician in the digital era ("Shoulda Beens") to virtual hookups ("Internet Romance").

Like Us on Facebook :

And yeah, there's a song about Batman (B.S.F.X).

WarRock's eclectic subject matter (including his critically heralded "Parks and Recreation"-themed EP) has led some reporters to lop him in with the nerdcore movement, originally created by Brooklyn-based rapper MC Frontalot.

But though he is proud to be considered part of the nerdcore scene, WarRock says he doesn't feel part of any particular genre.

In a KpopStarz exclusive interview, the Memphis-based rapper discussed his feelings on nerdcore, why "The Middle of Nowhere" is less strictly hip-hop than his previous two albums and why Psy's international success was, for him, both a blessing and a curse.

KpopStarz: How would you define the nerdcore genre?

Adam WarRock: I think nerdcore is either A, whatever MC Frontalot, the man who basically coined the phrase in the public consciousness, says it is, or B, it's just hip-hop that happens to be made by nerds, and about nerdy subjects. I think the reason a lot of people think a lot of the nerdcore guys have some kind of problem with [the label] is because when we all started making music, we just made hip-hop about whatever it was we were into. I don't think we were conscious of what subgenre niche music we were making. But we all eventually got lumped into nerdcore and eventually came to find other people in similar situations--people committed to making music that meant something to them. And the current community of nerdcore that exists is made up by a bunch of guys who kind of never intended to be nerdcore in the first place. It doesn't mean we have a problem with it, or that we don't like the name. I just think it's a matter of honesty to say in most interviews...that we never meant to be here. We were just making music.

KpopStarz: Like other artists associated with the nerdcore genre, you are often singled out for rapping about unusual subjects. How do you choose the subjects you make music about? Do you set out to avoid mainstream rap subjects like women and money?

Adam WarRock: I think I have plenty of songs about women and money, but I take a different perspective on them. I think I choose subjects to rap about the same way any artist does. It's something in my life or on my mind and it comes out when I hear music that I want to write to. The nature of the subjects being unusual just come from the fact that I happen to be very obsessive about pop culture. Maybe that says more about my life, than it does about my music.

KpopStarz: You mentioned that a previous KpopStarz article about you quoted a Korea Times interview out of context, implying you were "fed up" with Psy comparisons. Would you care to set the record straight?

Adam WarRock: The quotes that it took from the Korea Times interview didn't really communicate the fact that a lot of my comments about Psy comparisons were jokes. I mean, of course while Psy was literally the biggest pop sensation in the world, people who just saw that I was Asian and making any kind of rap-like music would be quick to make a Psy joke. Even my relatives who are Korean themselves made the jokes or comparisons. I thought it was funny, because if you listen to anything I do, it's absolutely nothing like Psy. Which is totally fine, but I mean it's a totally superficial, racial comparison to make. He's Korean. I'm Korean. We both rap. It's an obvious place to go when you don't engage with the kind of music [each of us make].

KpopStarz: What are your thoughts on the Psy phenomenon?

Adam WarRock: It was great to see him rise to that level of stardom, to show the world that an Asian-American artist could become the number one pop sensation worldwide, even when he's not speaking English, was incredibly helpful to Asian-American artists. But there's so much more out there, guys like Dumbfoundead or Lyrics Born, Giant Panda, on and on and on. There are so many Asian-American hip-hop artists who make wonderful music. Hell, Chops of The Mountain Brothers just finished his Kickstarter for his "Strength in Numbers" project, which was specifically trying to spotlight Asian-American artists. I was a huge supporter of that. There's a thriving community out there, and of course Psy helped all of us out, but it's up to us to make music of all kinds to show that we are our own people. And it's up to people to give us a chance to prove that there's more out there than Psy.

KpopStarz: How is your new album "The Middle of Nowhere" different from your previous work?

Adam WarRock: It's an album that's a lot more personal, a lot less nerdy and a lot less like a rap album. I don't know if that makes any sense. I worked with a lot of different producers, and tried hard to make the album sound cohesive, but less like a traditional rap album. It helped having a few producers on there who don't make rap, guys like Rocky O'Reilly, who was in an indie pop band called Oppenheimer, Greg Alsop from Tokyo Police Club, Danny Baranowsky who made the music to the video game Super Meat Boy. Some of those songs, I've spent a year or more working on them, just fleshing out ideas and figuring out how they fit into this album about feeling stuck or trapped on a plateau with your life and career. It sounds bleak, but in the end I hope it comes off as hopeful.

KpopStarz: What was is like for you growing up in Memphis? You have mentioned feeling like a loner in previous interviews. Do you feel your ethnicity contributed to your feelings of alienation?

Adam WarRock: I think my ethnicity has always been a factor of alienation. The South, and especially Memphis where I grew up, was hugely polarized along racial lines. Memphis has a huge black population, as well as a sizable conservative white population. The racial tension kind of permeates everything in the city. And as someone who's not on either side, you feel left out, even when it's being left out of controversies or things like that.

KpopStarz: What does being an artist of Korean decent mean to you? Do you feel it affects your music?

Adam WarRock: I honestly don't view myself as being a Korean artist, nor do I really view myself as being an American, or rather non-Korean artist. I mean, all of my experiences in life will contribute to the kind of music I make. And I grew up the kid of immigrants from South Korea, but I don't think it became a part of my identity. I think the pop culture, or the nerd or geek culture is more my identity in my music than my ethnicity.

KpopStarz: Is there anything you'd like to say about the state of Korean culture in the US? Are there any Korean hip-hop artists you'd like to collaborate with?

Adam WarRock: I don't know if I'm exactly plugged into Korean culture in the US. I do know I'd love to collaborate with Dumbfoundead as I'm a huge fan of his work. But other than that, I don't think I touch on any of the edges of those circles.

KpopStarz: Who are your heroes? Which artists, musical or otherwise, inspire you?

Adam WarRock: Jonathan Coulton is the person whose music inspired me to start doing what I do now. He makes nerdy, sort of sci-fi based folk-pop music, but everything he does has this core of emotion. I love his music. I listened to it and said, 'I want to do what he does, but in hip-hop form.' Beyond that, most of my heroes are pretty typical rap gods--Wu-Tang Clan, Atmosphere, Sage Francis, Black Star, people like that.

KpopStarz: Where did you get the idea to do an album about "Parks and Recreation."

Adam WarRock: I had the flu for like, a week, and I think I just watched 'Parks and Rec' every day until I passed out from cold medication. When I came out of it, I just wanted to make a song about Ron Swanson. It kind of just snowballed from there. That was definitely one of the biggest things I've ever done--getting attention from the cast and even NBC for that.

KpopStarz: It is mentioned on your website that some of the cast members are fans of the "Parks + Rec" EP. Which ones? Any chance of an Adam WarRock "Parks and Recreation" cameo?

Adam WarRock: Yeah, several of the cast picked up on it--Ben Schwartz, who plays Jean-Ralphio, Retta who plays Donna. I had NBC's Twitter tweeting about it. It was pretty crazy. But more than that, the TV blogosphere kind of went nuts with it, getting in Time and SPIN. Every TV blogger posted my Ron Swanson song ['Wacka Flocka Swanson'].

KpopStarz: What's next for you?

Adam WarRock: I'll be touring the Midwest in December, the West Coast in January and the East Coast in February. And then hitting a few events through the next half-year until I take my usual summer break. After that, who knows. I'm sure I'll watch or read something that will inspire me to make something new. That's the fun of what I do, I never know when something big will happen.

K-Pop Rewind: Park Ji Yoon "Coming of Age Ceremony"

With the release of her most recent single "Mr. Lee" a couple weeks ago, Park Ji Yoon proves that even in her thirties, her sex appeal has not waned and she still knows how to keep her music relevant to the times.

Both of those very important qualities are what made her a star to begin with and are especially obvious in her 2000 music video "Coming of Age Ceremony."

The single was Park Ji Yoon's first release after switching to JYP Entertainment from Seoul Records (now LOEN Entertainment) and the music video and dance routine helped spice things up in the early days of K-Pop.

"Coming of Age Ceremony" kicked off a dance craze in South Korea spawning both a controversy for the overly-sexualized moves and a shift in the industry that continues to this day of female performers working hard to introduce new concepts that will set them apart from the rest of the herd.

Additionally, the choreography from "Coming of Age Ceremony" is among a short list of favorites that international pop star Psy routinely performed at his live shows.

Park Ji Yoon's fourth album Coming of Age Ceremony also proved to be her most successful, selling over 420,000 copies after its release on July 26, 2000.

Since that time, the singer's popularity has slowly diminished, until her most recent comeback on October 21 with the digital single "Mister Lee."

"Mister Lee" is Park Ji Yoon's first single to make its way onto the US K-Pop charts, topping out at number two and has sold well over 400,000 copies in the past few weeks. It is also her first release under her newest record label MYSTIC89.

While "Coming of Age Ceremony" was not Park Ji Yoon's first single, it did mark the high point of her career - and now, with the newest single "Mister Lee" amazing fans around the world, a career revival might not be far away.

Despite Girl's Generation's Win, PSY's 'Gentleman' Maintains The Most YouTube Views of 2013

With higher YouTube views and ITunes sales, PSY is still on top.

With higher YouTube views and ITunes sales, PSY is still on top.

In reaction to widespread international media attention regarding Girl's Generation's win of the first YouTube Music Video Award, YG Entertainment began to spread an article from Billboard which supported the fact that PSY was not a loser in the competition. Statistically, PSY has performed better on YouTube as well as on iTunes charts with the release of both "Gangnam Style" and "Gentleman." As publications from Time to US Weekly attempt to explain to readers how a girl group from Korea beat Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga, it appears as though YG Entertainment is pondering how PSY was defeated.

Like Us on Facebook :

Despite what is approaching 600 million views on YouTube, Gentleman has failed to have the success that Gangnam Style garnered through international radio play. As a male solo artist in his mid-thirties, PSY not only has to compete with abundance of youth oriented acts like EXO, who have swept the Korean pop market, but with acts like Girls' Generation who receive strong support from the uncle fan market. While PSY may have more universal appeal due to his humorous style, Girls' Generation has captured the hearts of both the youth and older male fans.

The importance of YouTube as a medium of the K-Pop industry is also a key component of YG Entertainment's reaction to the win by Girl's Generation. With major labels releasing videos with subtitles immediately after they are shown or often simultaneously as they are shown in Korea, international fans have turned to YouTube as their primary source for K-Pop music. YouTube has also been responsible for the career launch of humorous K-Pop commentators such Eat Your Kimchi, whose input helps to fuel the marrket.

With EXO nominated for an award in the upcoming MTV EMA Awards, as well as the Melon Awards, and MAMA, SM Entertainment stands to sweep the ceremonies. However, YG Entertainment will be pitting one of their strongest acts, G-Dragon, against EXO in numerous categories with the Melon Awards and MAMA Awards. The fact that YG Entertainment chose to respond to Girl's Generation win in this manner is curious and telling of what will most certainly be an entertaining award season.
